Seeing myself on Video - the shock!

A couple of weekends ago, I was video'd as part of a work thing, and the video's were finally put up on our server. I was so nervous about seeing myself on video as I always seem to stand out as being the fattest person there.. I am very pleased to report that I looked pretty much NORMAL! Yes, I did recognise myself, but not because I looked larger than everyone else. I was almost relieved when I saw myself on video and realised that I was looking more normal. I don't see myself the way I looked on the video... To me, I still look like the 116kg fat girl! it was a bit of an eyeopening experience.

I feel really good with myself!

Cheers,

More Variety! Less Restriction! YAY!

I’ve noticed that my restriction has eased over the past couple of days, 4 weeks after my fill. I was able to eat a small piece of lasagna last night, about the size of half of a deck of cards and a tablespoon of vegetables. I wish I had taken a photo for you, it was such a cute little portion. It was like a mini version of what you’d serve on a big plate. I wasn’t sure if I was going to manage the lasagna, with the pasta and all, but I was able to finish it within about 20 mins, and felt full afterwards. As you know, I’m eating a bit more protein at the moment. Here is a photo of my latest concoction – Tuna Cottage Cheese – YUM!

Lunch today was 2 corn thins with some mushed avocado, tomato, onion and smoked salmon. I made 4 of them, but that was a bit adventurous and only got through 2 in the space of 30 mins. They were delish! Trying to get the water in as well, but am finding it hard to drink for about an hour after I eat (which is totally normal!!) but then I forget to drink until it’s time to eat again!!!

Hopefully I’ll see some movement on the scales soon!!! I’m busting to know if I’ve lost weight. I truly do feel like I’ve lost the cm’s even if I haven’t moved on the scales. I was in a size 14 dress on Saturday night!!! WooHoo!!!

Protein Protein Protein!

I've got to start eating more protein. I've reviewed my food diary and I am not getting nearly enough protein for the exercise and strength training I am doing and it might be the trick to getting me off this blasted plateau. How do I add protein to my diet you ask? I've decided that I'm going to start eating more of the following foods:

1. Protein Shakes - I know, not the best for something to make you feel full as it goes down quite easily, but it's fairly low in calories and there is a high percentage of protein in them.
2. Cottage Cheese - I love cottage cheese, high in protein, low in fat and calories and makes me feel full full full! Love it with a bit of chopped up tomato, salt, pepper and lemon juice. Delish!
3. Cans of Tuna - perfect for lunch with a couple of crakers or some avocado, tomato and spanish onion. 1 small can of tuna keeps me full for up to 4 hours!
4. Smoked salmon - yep, tough I know.... but it's gotta be done, another rich source of protein, high in good fats and low in calories.
5. Tuna and Salmon Sashimi - I'm obsessed with the stuff at the moment, and it is such an amazing source of protein.

As you can see, 3 out of those 5 food choices is seafood! COOL! I went out yesterday and picked up some cans of salmon and tuna, some smoked salmon, some cottage cheese and some velish soups (cos I'm definitely not getting my 5 servings of veges per day!) 1 small velish gives me 3 servings... COOL again!

Yesterday was a great day for me food wise as well. I felt a little bit better than Friday (hangover had pretty much gone) I did 1.5 hours at the gym, grabbed a coffee with my bandit friend, I had a velish soup for lunch, a couple of cheese and crackers for a late afternoon snack and then went out for a hen's night. I ordered this mushroom goulash, it was a MASSIVE serving... but there was a nice slopppy mushroom sauch and I was able to eat about 5 mouthfuls and felt full. (The black forest cake was also pretty good, and easy to get down, but we won't talk about that now will we???) *lol* My fiance came and picked me up and I felt like something salty... hot chippies from mcdonalds! So I got a small fries, had 2 and then gave the rest to fiance. I enjoyed the taste, got the craving out of my system too. I also burnt off those calories a little later on in the evening *wink wink*

It's 11am and I've had a Celebrity Slim Protein Shake and a small bowl (around 100g?) of cottage cheese with some salt and pepper just now. I'm feeling content, not sick or stuck or sore or overfilled.

I've realised with the increase in my restriction that I really have to get back to basics with my food. I quite often let my tastebuds control what I am eating, not my band (and I know it's a two way street but my band wins more than not, yet I give in to what my tastebuds want... with dire dire consequences!!). Too often, when I have gone out for meals I have chosen to have foods that I know I won't be able to get down, because I feel like eating them, I feel like the taste. So I order it, and more often than not, the band doesn't like the choice and lets me know about it. I've got to start thinking about what I'm able to eat, not what I would like to eat. This doesn't mean that I should only choose soups... but I really shouldn't be having a spaghetti bolanase or a woodfired pizza because I can't eat pasta or bread anymore... does that make sense? It's only when I don't get a choice of what I eat (when I go over to someone's house for a meal) then I have trouble, and I usually make up some excuse for why I don't eat alot... which i feel really bad about.

Another exciting thing that's happened is that my bandit friend has been asked to go for a photoshoot (before and after shots) for Johnson and Johnson (the makers of her band) and has been asked to talk about her banding story for one of the women's mags! HOW EXCITING!!! I will definitely be posting up more information about her story and where you can find it as soon as she tells me! The best thing is, is that by doing this story, she is "outing" herself to the world that she has had a lap band, because, like me, she was very private about getting one. I think if I was to "out" myself I would Love to do it in this way!

Have a great Sunday!

Alcohol and the band do not mix!

So I've been on this work conference for the last couple of days. Last night, after the conference finished for the day, we all headed down to the bar for a couple of drinks before the dinner started. Today I am massively hung over... green around the gills, waves of nausea, sandpaper tounge, ready to pass out hung over. Because I don't drink with meals (one of our important 10 commandments) I don't drink... hardly ever.. and when I do, I get sloshed over 1 measly glass of red wine! Meanwhile 4 glasses and 2 cocktails later (with next to no food in my stomach) I was absolutely pissed off my nut... it was a fabulous night, but I am paying for it today. My band is extra tight. I've had nothing to eat today... except a cracker and some cheese. I tried to eat a small bowl of pasta tonight, but have had two pieces and promptly tasted them for the second time.. very very very self-inflicted... but so worth it!!

Ease of Restriction

I've definitely been feeling better about my food intake over the last few days. The Spewing has stopped and I'm tolerating salads and veges, in very small portions. Today for lunch I had a lovely cous cous salad with baby spinach, spanish onions, baby tomatos, lamb and balsamic vinegar and garlic - delish. Only 1 cup - but I managed to eat it and keep it down within 30mins, so feeling pretty good! I've also got this for dinner tonight which I am looking forward to, but not before doing a Core and Spin class (90mins exercise for me tonight!).

My next Appointment with my surgeon is in 5 weeks time, and I've decided that I'm not going to look at the scales until then. I'm sick of seeing the same numbers come up again and again, no matter what I am eating or what exercise I am doing. The next 5 weeks will be all about getting back to normal eating patterns, avoiding PB's as much as possible, exercising my little heart out and enjoying Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand (travel for work!! Lucky me!!!).

Congrats to MJW who has just registered a 20kg loss after having the band for only 1 month!!! Well done girl!

Comment on a Comment

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to say thanks to the two posters who left a comment on my blog post earlier this morning. Just to update you all, I'm doing HEAPS better today with my food - Everything has kept down so far and I've had vitawheats with cheese, mango, cereal and rice thins. So far so good!!

I think I know why I've been a bit tighter than normal - I think it's because of the stress I have at home at the moment. I don't really want to go into it at the moment, but my eating patterns and types of foods that I am eating are alot different to what I'm use to, mostly because of the visitors we've had stay with us over the past few days. I find that when I stress my band does get tighter. When I was away the week before it definitely wasn't as bad and I was having lots of protein and veges.

Also, I find that once I throw up once, my stomach around the band gets swollen and takes a while to get back to normal - if I eat when it's swollen, it just gets worse and worse until I struggle with even keeping my saliva down. I think that's what happened yesterday!

I'm going to wait until my next appointment (25th March) and see if my food intake has normalised. If it hasn't I'll be asking for some fill out.

Thank you all so much for reading and commenting... I take all your advice and feedback on board.

Getting this band was still the best thing I could have done for myself... for those of you thinking about getting a lapband... DO IT!!

Thank God It's Friday!

What a week it has been! I've been up early every day to try and beat the traffic. Why is it when wet stuff falls from the sky Sydney Drivers go 40km slower than the speed limit?? I've also been exercising every day this week and I am paying for it today as that Core Class I did on Wednesday has fucked up my legs and I can hardly walk! Still, I managed a Body Jam session last night and loved loved loved loved loved it! I didn't feel like going yesterday cos I'd had quite a few spews in the afternoon so my chest felt pretty ordinary... but I went, and once I got moving, everything felt better...

Food yesterday was really average:
Breakfast was half a bowl of cereal - stopped at half a bowl cos I was full but managed to keep it down..
Lunch was 2 spoonfuls of roast vegetable cous cous salad which I sicked up
Afternoon tea was a scotch finger biscuit and a green tea, which I sicked up
When I got home from work I ate 3 rice thins, which I sicked up
Dinner was half a rissole, cheese, sour cream and some tomato relish, which I ate.. and then sicked up
Supper was mango and jelly which I managed to keep down.

What a nightmare of a day yesterday with my food! You would think that my weight would be plumetting in a downwards spiral at the moment, but I'm still 92kg and can't work out for the life of me why I haven't moved on the scales!!!! Very very frustrating as I have been exercising for at least 45 mins every day of this week!

Today I'm taking it easy with my food.. nothing ambitious - no vegetables, soft fruits. I'm out for dinner tonight and I'm going to order either a soup or a curry but I'm going to stick to just the juices and a little rice. Tough one because I haven't told many people that I'm banded and with the trouble I've been having since my last fill, it's going to be awkward if I need to get up to go to the bathroom every so often!!

Hope everyone had a lovely valentines day!

Worried about the spewing?

A question from anonymous... thanks anonymous for dropping by my humble blog and leaving a comment!!!

To answer your questions - yes and no. There are two different types of spews. There is the lapband spew or productive burp - basically a burp that ends up producing the contents of the small stomach into the toilet/sink/disposible bag due to a big piece not going through. This can be involuntary or voluntary (if you stick your fingers down your throat - very relieving when the spew won't come by itself!!), and doesn't involve the acid of your stomach, so you don't get the sick smelly vomity grossness and you feel instantly better. You also don't get the heaving and wretching that you do if you have a real vomit. That's when the stomach contents of your lower tummy get forced through the band hole and up into the big bad world... those are the vomits that scare me. They also hurt like a motherfucker. That's when you think.. fuck fuck fuck.. my band has slipped. That's when you feel like you're having a heart attack cos there is so much pain in that area. Thankfully, I have only ever had one - when I had a touch of gastro.

I've also read somewhere that if you vomit every day, 3 times a day for 6 months then you can stretch the band, or make the band slip or something.. which I'm also worried about.

Does that answer your question??

Anyhoo, food yesterday was good:

Breakfast
Uncle Toby's Protein Plus 40g
Time Taken: 30mins
Difficulty level: 3/10
Number of Spews: 0

Lunch
Chopped up tomato, avocado, onion and lemon juice (1 cup total food)

Time Taken: 60mins
Difficulty level: 5/10
Number of Spews: 0

Afternoon tea
1 slice ham
1 slice cheese
Time Taken: 20mins
Difficulty Level: 4/10
Number of Spews: 0

Dinner
2 tablespoons of tinned spaghetti
4 rice thins
1 ice block
Time taken: 30mins
Difficult Level: 5/10
Number of Spews: 0

Yes peoples, a spew free day! WooHoo! Did 1.5 hours of dragon boat race training yesterday too, so my back and shoulders got a great workout. We've got a corporate challenge race on the weekend for Chinese New Year. Very excited! Loving the "trying new sports" thing. Doesn't feel like you're exercising at all.. it's fun and I get to team build with my colleagues at work.

Tonight I'm off to do a CORE class at the gym. 45mins of pure torture with a bosu ball... but so well worth it. I'll also do 15mins of arm and chest weights to even out the workout. Tomorrow is a Body Jam Class and then Friday I might see about going to the gym at lunch with the girls from work - or I might take a day off, or I might even go before work! We'll see...

As for my weight - well, I've lost what I put on during my trip to the Philippines last week - so now I'm back to where I started 2 weeks ago!! But I'm feeling really fit and "skinny" at the moment, which is a feeling I just want to bottle up and sell!

Have a great day!

So a pretty good day for food, except for dinner. I think it's because my in-laws are staying with me at the moment and I don't have the luxury of taking my time with my meal... but that's another story in itself!!

On another note, my neck is hurting like hell at the moment. You know those two muscles that run down each side of the neck and into the middle of your back... it feels soooo sore! I'm booked in to a massage tonight (yum) but that's not until after I do 90 mins of dragon boat racing training!! My poor poor shoulders!

Have a great day!

Spoke too soon!

10 mins later - half way throught the dessert I posted earlier...

This dessert is taking me longer to eat - granted I am on the computer checking up on all my blogging bandits out there, but I'm struggling with this dessert at the moment. I think it's the mango... aaaaaaand I don't think I'm concentrating too much on the chew chew chew thing cos I'm typing and clicking and shit..

Night night!

Food Portion Examples

Hi All,
Just wanted to revisit the whole portion control thing cos at the moment I'm eating really weirdly... why, cos I'm tighter than a cats bum! hehe Love that analogy! Anyhoo, just want to give you all an example of what I am eating at the moment. Bare in mind that I am approx 8.8mL full at the moment. For all of you who don't know what that means, it means that I have 8.8mL of saline injected into my 10mL band.

I'm going to list the ingredients in my meal, the time taken to eat it, the "level of difficulty" that is, what my band thinks of the meal and the number of spews (if any!!!)

Breakfast
Boiled Eggs and Soldiers
1 egg
1/2 slice of Bergen Pumkin Bread
5g Olive oil spread
1 tea (drunk before the meal)
Time taken: 30-45mins
Level of Difficulty: 5/10
Number of Spews: 0

Lunch
Cous Cous Salad with Tuna
1 750mL bottle water (drunk before)
1/4 cup cous cous
1 slice eggplant, sliced
1/2 tomato, sliced
10g finely cut up spanish onion
50g feta
Half can of Lemon Tuna
lemon juice, salt, pepper
Time taken: 60 mins
Level of Difficulty: 8.5/10 (eggplant was difficult to eat, feta and cous cous was relatively easy)
Number of Spews: 1 (I stopped eating the eggplant after that and it went down a bit easier)

Afternoon tea
1 shortbread biscuit
2 tea with skim milk, no sugar (drunk after)
Time taken: 10mins
Level of Difficulty: 1/10
Number of Spews: 0

Dinner
Chow Mein Mince with Bok Choy
Diet Cordial: drunk before and after the 2nd spew
Size was approx 2 tablespoons of the mince mix and 1 slice of bok choy
Time Taken: 20 mins
Level of Difficulty: 8/10
Number of Spews: 2

I also have waiting for me in the fridge a diet jelly (125mL) topped with a tablespoon of fresh mango and a tablespoon of ice magic. Which will probably go down quite easily, but take around 10 mins to eat. Here is a photo of my concoction! YUM!

Hopefully you can see the teaspoon next to it to see how big (or small) the dessert is!
Will definitely start taking more photos of my food portions... other bloggers have inspired me!
Cheers,
LBG xx

Too tight??

While I'm not one to complain about the fact that I have control over my food and am eating like a sparrow... I'm also sicking up at least one meal a day, which is not normal for me (I'm usually a once a week girl). I contribute it to the fact that I'm eating at weird times at the moment, because of the travel and time changes... but... when I went out for a meal with a girlfriend yesterday I got through half a sushi roll... and I couldn't eat another bite... Half a sushi roll? What is that? That's nothing... I'm struggling with drinking stuff... like it takes me ages just to swallow a gulp. Maybe I should be sipping rather than gulping.

Anyhoo... I'm not complaining about the fact that I can't eat much, but I've found that I've started targeting the foods that I know I'll get down - like soup and ice blocks, and chocolate. My friend and I went out for a muffin and coffee after our exercise class this morning and after my coffee I ate only 1/4 of my muffin (and we shared a muffin cos we're both banded). We both felt kind of smug that we couldn't finish it. I've had a can of tuna since then and I am FULL.

I had a real issue with it on the plane though. It's not every day that you get to travel business class, and I couldn't eat much of any of the food - and it was soooooooooooooooooooo yummy.. but after 1-2 bites, I couldn't do any more.. and I got depressed (stupid brain). So then I tried to eat more and yep, up it came...

Ok, enough rambling from me today... Have a great weekend!

My New Favourite Food

Tuna and Salmon Sashimi. In other words - RAW FISH. Fucking to-die-for. I was a bit skeptical about trying it, but when I had some sashimi in some sushi (totally by accident) the other day, I decided that it wasn't that bad, and that I should take the plunge and give raw fish (on its own) a go. Am I glad I did? Absolutely! I was a bit worried though about the whole food poisoning thing. Being in a foreign country, having a band, feeling nasty vomiting my guts up with the high risk for a slippage... not cool.

This is why I like Sashimi:
1. It's bloody tasty - but not fishy slimey, tasty - wonderful, fresh, velvety, slightly fishy tasty
2. My band LOVES sashimi - it's got the texture where it literally melts in your mouth, yet it's all protein so you get full off it really quickly
3. Its packed full of nutrients - good fats, omega 3
4. The portion sizes it comes in (al-la sushi train style) is PERFECT for us bandits

It is my new favourite food. I had it for lunch AND dinner last night and I swear I could have it for breakfast as well!! *lol*

So if you're banded and you're forced into a sushi train adventure with your sushi loving friends, give the Sashimi a go! (My band only likes 2 small pieces of sushi normally). Instead of wondering where the nearest toilet is, you'll be wondering when the next piece of Sashimi will be making its way round the train.

I leave the Philippines this afternoon. I was only in Manila for 4 days. It is a Mad city, and I hope I get to come back again!!

Oh oh, before I leave you today - I went shopping at a mall close to where I was working yesterday, and ... *so excited*.... I bought a skirt and top in a size..... 16... fucking awesome! Fucking fucking awesome. I tried on the 18 and thought... I could go lower.... and boy, I went lower... 16 is COMFORTABLE... not squeezy tight fat roll hanging over the top... but fuck I look great in this top and skirt comfortable. I was in such a good mood I worked out at the gym for 1 hour last night and wanted to do more..

I say it again, I love my band!

Cheers!

LBG

P.S. Reney - dude, excellent idea re the WonTons. Will definitely give that one a go
P.P.S MJW - you'll be fine come september - you'll know what your limits are with your food, just make sure you're in an aisle seat and perhaps keep an empty bottle close by! Oh, and those sick bags do the job pretty well too!!

WonTon Noodle Soup

I love Wonton Noodle soup. It's low in calories, has a load of veges in it and it tastes superb... however, my band doesn't like WonTon Noodle Soup. Every time I eat it, I spew it up.. without fail, no matter how much I chew chew chew..

Last night was no different - I ordered WonTon Noodle Soup and slurped up most of the soupy part... easy. Then I had a small mouthful of noodles. It sat there, the pain got worse and so I stood up and walked around - the pain went away. COOL, I thought! Another bite... a bit of vege... all over. Spew time. My band lied to me.. those noodles were still there!!!

Yesterday I also ordered a plate of fruit for breakky. It came with some cottage cheese (which I LOVE). Because I'm overseas at the moment I've got some access to some fantastic tropical fruits... and there was enough on my fruit platter to feed about 6 bandits. So I ate the cottage cheese, no problems. One bite of the mango (oh, god... it was delish!).. and that was it .. I was FULL! One more bite and I would have spewed. Soooooooooo disappointed that I had to leave the watermelon, rockmelon, pineapple and the mango sitting there.. I didn't even bring a container so I could have it later... I almost cried! What an absolute waste (not to mention the $20 I paid for it!!!).. *sigh*

Anyhoo, back to the noodle carnage that was my dinner last night. So after a massive spew in the toilet I was completely over my WonTon Noodle Soup, put it outside my room, grabbed a tolberone and a gatorade from the mini bar and sat in bed and ate it... something I now feel terribly guilty about... I should have stopped at the noodles. Buggar Buggar Buggar.

I do get some reprieve though - I did a 40min walk on the treadmill averaging 6.2km/hr, then did 30 minutes of weights, and then went for a 15minute swim.

Moral of this story: Stay AWAY from WonTon Noodle Soup - your band will never love it as much as you do. AND... Tolberone and Gatorade should not allowed in a Minibar fridge!

LBG xx

P.S. Thanks for reading everyone! I put in a counter to see how many people were visiting, and in 1 week I've had 170 people come see my little blog! CoooooooooooooooL!!! Who would think that people would be interested in reading about my marathon in-flight spews and other tales! *lol*

Happy Bandiversary!!

Can you believe it? 1 year banded... how time flies! How did I celebrate? Brunch with a fellow bandit who was banded the same week as me! (although she's lost a shit more weight than me... ). Brunch was great... we had fruit, yoghurt and juice. We got through about half of the fruit, and a couple of glasses of juice and was full full full! (Yay!)

The fill restriction has eased slightly over the past couple of days which is great. I had a shocking time on Friday night when I flew home from New Zealand. I had the chicken curry, thinking that the rice and chicken and sauce would go down ok... first bite and I knew I was in trouble. Lucky I had already drunk a whole bottle of poweraide because I literally spewed and spewed and spewed and spewed for 3 hours and filled the 750mL bottle twice. OMG I thought my chest was going to explode, and I really really honest to god thought my band had slipped I was in so much pain!! I was sitting next to the window, so I was able to hide my bottle next to me and kind of turn my head every time I wanted to spew. The problem was, the more I spewed the more swollen my stomach and band got.. and I had to start spitting into the bottle cos even saliva wasn't going down at one point!!! As soon as I got up and walked around, I felt better. But as soon as I sat down, I started again. I was so paranoid that customs were going to think I was doing drugs or something cos I felt so ill. I was terrified I'd be standing in the customs line and have a vomit in the middle of everyone, with scary customs people looking at me, then dragging me off into a room to interrogate me about why I was vomiting.. and if they thought that I was hiding a supply of drugs internally and the condom had burst... What a flight!! luckly all was ok when I got off the plan and started moving again. I was very very tender the next day...

Anyhoo... happy bandiversary to me!! Despite that horror story above, it's still the best thing I could have done! I LOVE my band! :)
